Finding Your SIC Code

Starting this year, we are asking employers in all our annual directories to provide the four digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code of their primary business activity. The change will allow us to better profile employers and present more meaningful information to readers interested in specific industry groups.

You can quickly look up your SIC classification online. There are several free look-up sites, including Solutions Software Corp. and the US Department of Labor.

Many of you will be aware that the SIC system is being replaced by the more comprehensive North American Industry Classification Systems (NAICS). If you know your six-digit NAICS classification, you can find the corresponding SIC here.

If more than one SIC code describes your business, use the more general description (which usually ends in a zero). For example, it doesn't make a tremendous difference to us if you indicate that your SIC is #3843 (manufacturers of dental equipment and supplies) or #3842 (manufacturers of surgical appliances and supplies). We'll index you in the more general #3840 category (manufacturers of medical instruments and supplies), so that you can be compared to similar employers in your industry.

If you have significant difficulties determining your primary SIC, please contact our editorial department by calling 416-964-6069 and ask for any of our editors.

Don't worry about making a mistake on the SIC section -- we review all your information before publication.

Thank you for your assistance.
